Health Week

It seems that this week is Health Week at one of the primary schools and the pupils "will be taking part in various activities from Monday to Friday. This will include rugby, football, dance, athletics, cross country, karate, yoga, and healthy living talks".

Where will such activities take place if the schools are moved to the new Logie site?

  1. Schools that have playing spaces on site can do this, but if new sites don't have this, will the children be bussed to remote playing fields or will they have to do without? I thought the Government was trying to encourage MORE physical activity, not less!!!

  2. It interests me to see that there is not a reaction box for those who think the move is positive.

  3. Apologies for the lack of reaction box "for those who think the move is positive".

There is a new box "irrelevant" available for those who have that viewpoint about the blog post.

  4. Health week is a fantastic opportunity for children to be exposed to lots of physical activities they might not have seen before. As a teacher at another school in the city I can confirm that only one of our activities required a grass surface. Everything else took place in the gym hall or on the concrete playground. My children are loving health week so far and with the proposed new gym hall in the new school it can only get better.

  5. This is complete and utter scare mongering. I will comment on the other sections later but just to tackle health week first and how terrible it will be if and when the school moves up the road. Unless it's escaped certain people's notice, St. Josephs has no grass. It has 2 concrete playgrounds that are falling apart, one small 'garden area' and a tiny, run down gym hall - the 'football pitch' is not even part of the school and is only used under careful supervision when timetabled. I cannot believe that anyone would suggest that a brand new purpose built school with more outdoor areas than the current school (and I'll explain this later), a brand new gym hall and all the technology £10.3m brings, could be worse than what is presently available at the current ageing school.

  6. ... and I meant to add that the current St. Joseph's gym hall doubles up as a Dining Hall... no amount of timetabling can give the current crop at St. Josephs enough time in that hall as they have to set out for lunch every day.

  7. Scare mongering..... yes StJ' has no grass, will the new school? No Playing field has been confirmed by the council, at the new site.
How do you know the new school will have more outdoor space? It's the same size as the Joeys site and will have two schools and a nursery and all the car parking.Where do you suggest they are getting all the space from? Between your ears perhaps?
Did you put your clock forward 48hrs by mistake at the weekend, because April Fools day is tommorrow.

  8. "How do you know the new school will have more outdoor space?" - I had a look on Google. Please any concerned parents, do the same. Just cut out the proposed new site and overlay the 2 new schools including the nursery AND the after school club (bearing in mind the football pitch is NOT part of the school and neither is the car park). You'll see how much more room there is. And that's with BOTH schools having their own gym halls.

I'm not even going to comment on the 'between the ears' and 'April Fools' comments... it's fairly sad. Just stop misleading people.

  9. Has Dundee City Council confirmed that there will be more outdoor area in the new location? I would love to have this as I still cannot imagine where they will fit everything including parking space for all the staff and parents. Bearing in mind that the playground will now also have to accomodate more children...

Regarding the ageing school - this conflicts with the recent HMI report that comments on the condition of St. Joseph's and it never mentioned anything about it being in a dire condition? This is what puzzles me about the proposal....

  10. The whole of the Joeys site available to the council, inc car park and pitch is approx same as the Logie, that is a fact.
What is also a fact is that Logie site is not big enough if it is to comply with the School Premises Regulations.
Please parents cut out the sites, go ahead.I did it 10 days ago and unless there size has changed in that time, they are about the same, with the Joeys being bigger. This is totaly irrelevant anyway, as neither the Joeys or Logie can comply if all 3 schools are built on the one site.
Oh and approx 300m2 of Logie can't be used because of the protected trees and the steep slope at the rear.

Have you visted the site? I have.

So come back with a good reason and not some dross.

The measurments as given by the Council with regard to Logie don't stack up.

  11. 'Brother Bedes' comments above are not doing your cause any good. How ignorant.

With regard to open space - yes it would be great to have a playing field etc but we send our children to effectively an inner city school and a location in the west end with green open space would be impossible.

  14. Casey, I think you're right - let's make the most of what we already have, new schools are not the solution. Let's continue with what's already a great school in a good location.
